The Three Musketeers in Ljubljana (Slovenia)

The Three Musketeers in Ljubljana (Slovenia)

The journey to Ljubljana was a long one – especially for Mathi and Evguenia, who had to catch a flight from Edinburgh at 6am and had a layover in Amsterdam. Nevertheless, after plenty of naps on the plane, the two of us were re-united with Luna in Bologna. What followed after was a 5 hour shuttle bus ride, which brought us to our new home – exhausted but very excited!

Next morning, not wasting a minute, we were given an introduction by Luna’s and Evguenia’s supervisor Leon Kos. Not only did he show us our new work place and explained in detail the project we will be associated with (which is no less than fusion reactor simulations!), but also gave us a taste of Slovenian countryside. That involved looking at castles, climbing hills with our shoes wet from clumsily stepping into the stream and going deep into pitch black caves with nothing more than a mobile phone flash light.

Apart from being an excellent scientist, Leon is also full of fascinating facts and stories about Slovenia. One of such interesting facts that Leon told us was about the Cerknica lake. When full, it is the largest lake in Slovenia, but in the summer it can completely disappear. When this happens, the local farmers cut the grass growing on the newly formed plain and sell it to the Arab Sheikhs to feed their camels.

On Monday we had a more detailed introduction to our projects. Our mentors explained each project to us and gave us the plan for the first week. We met some PhD students of the University of Ljubljana working in the same lab as us. They explained their cutting-edge research topics that sounded very interesting. Evguenia and Luna are sharing an office with a PhD student called Vanja. Mathi will be working on the other side of the building in a computer lab – each of us nearby our mentors!
