Answers: Let the Blood Flow!

Here are the answers to last week’s quiz. I hope you liked it – even though I must admit that some answers were quite hard to find.

Answer to question 1. The highest flow speed is obtained at position (a).

Answer to question 1. The highest flow speed is reached at position (c).

As you see, the highest speed was reached at position (c), in the narrow right branch. The speed is high there since the diameter of the branch decreases, increasing the pressure and pushing the fluid forward.

The answer to question 2. The highest speed is reached at position (b).

The answer to question 2. The highest speed is reached at position (b).

In the second answer, we see that the flow is not symmetric at all because the artery is changing its direction. The flood is pushed to the right wall of the artery. Therefore, the speed is highest there.

The answer to question 3. The speed is highest at position (c).

The answer to question 3. The speed is highest at position (c).

Question 3 was a really tricky one since the maximum speed is very similar at positions (a), (b) and (c). The correct answer is (c), even though the artery is quite broad there. Since the artery changes direction, the blood is pushed to the right cell wall, and the flow accelerates. Not much blood is flowing into the narrow branch at position (d) due to the inclination of the intersection.

I declare Onur the winner! Congratulations and thanks for participating.
